About the Artist
I have a history of working “hot.” For many years, my main livelihood came from the creation of functional ceramic art. Then, in May 2005, I found hot, globby, molten glass.
In my Sparks studio, I work with a torch and soda-lime glass to create beads and blown glass vessels. The process involves melting glass in a 1500-degree flame and winding it onto a stainless steel mandrel. I then balance the molten glass by constantly rotating the mandrel and fighting the force of gravity. After further manipulation and embellishment the glass is annealed in a kiln to provide strength and durability. Cold work provides the finishing touches.
While it would be easy to be influenced by the styles of the many different bead artists who are popular today, I am primarily self-taught and try to maintain a sense of simplicity in all my work.
